Nelson bags third medal

Bermuda’s team have continued to enjoy success at the Fina World Masters Swimming Championships in Montreal, Canada.

Colleen Nelson captured her third medal, a bronze, yesterday in the 50 metres freestyle in the 65-69 age group, finishing in 34.61sec, having already claimed a silver in the 50 fly and bronze in the 100 breaststroke on Tuesday.

Lori Sommer placed 65th in the 50-54 age category in a time of 35.68.

Gerhard Boonsta, Nicke Rowse and Victor Ruberry, were scheduled to swim later on yesterday, while Nelson, Sommer and Sandra Dallas were set to compete in the 50 breaststroke.

This is the third time the Island has taken part at the championships where more than 6,000 athletes, including Olympians, from more than 50 countries are competing.

Bermuda’s team, coached by Olympian Ruberry, also includes Martina Olcheski-Bell, Lori Sommer, Trish Rowse and Lara Rogers.

Only Nelson and Dallas have championship experience, having swum two years ago when the event was held in Riccone, Italy.

Bermuda’s Lisa Blackburn is also competing at the championship, competing for T2 Aquatics Team from Naples, Florida.
