Masters finish on high

Nick Rowse in the 400 freestyle

Bermuda’s swimmers finished on a high note at the World Masters Championships in Montreal, Canada, at the weekend.

Sandra Dallas, Paul DeGuilio and Nick Rowse all competed at the Aquatic Complex at Parc Jean Drapeau on Saint Helen’s Island.

In the 70-75 category in the 50 metres backstroke, Dallas, who won two silver medals at the championships, finished fifteenth in a time of 1min 7.88sec.

DeGuilio came 22nd in the 50-54 age category in the 400 freestyle in 5:09.47, just six seconds more than when he competed at the Latin American Championships nine years ago in Brazil.

Rowse, competing in his first long-course meet since university, came eighteenth in the 45-49 age group in the 400 freestyle in 5:52.31.

Colleen Nelson, who also competed in Montreal, said: “It’s been a long, tiring week. Everyone agreed that it was a great experience and that we all want to find another Masters meet abroad.”

The next Pan American Masters Championships will be held in Medellin, Colombia, where Bermuda hope to send a larger team than the ten athletes that competed in Montreal.
