Fourteen barrels of food, weighing between 300 and 400 pounds, have been collected to be distributed to the less fortunate on the Island.

As part of its Open Hands Loving Hearts food drive, Bermuda CableVision has been distributing the collections of non-perishable food items to charities that run feeding programmes.

Food was given to the Eliza DoLittle Society Food Bank, the Seventh Day Adventist feeding programme and the Bermuda Coalition for the Protection of Children.

A boost to the programme came from CableVision’s concert ‘To Bermuda with Love,’ where a number of children’s groups performed. Each attendee was asked to bring three non-perishable food items.

That concert, together with the collection of food from various blue barrels placed in schools, supermarkets and churches, resulted in the 14 barrels of food being collected.

For a second consecutive year Mount St Agnes school led the way, collecting nine barrels of food. The school will be presented with an award to recognise its efforts.

“The children have really taken this project to heart, showing a profound compassion for people in our community who are lacking in such basics as enough food to eat,” said CableVision CEO Terry Roberson.

“The inspiring performances and support shown by these children have fuelled many donations, and our thanks go out to them, as well as to all who came forward to contribute food and be a part of this initiative.

“We will continue collecting non-perishable items to make sure pantries remain stocked and feeding programmes can continue to do their important work.

“Our blue collection bins remain in place across the Island, so we encourage everyone to help us keep up the momentum and help to end hunger in Bermuda.”

The drive will continue with barrels remaining at: Arnold’s Family Market on St John’s Road, Pembroke, Arnold’s Supermarket on Somerset Road, Sandys, Maximart Supermarket on Middle Road, Sandys, Arnold’s Discount Warehouse, Ewing Street, Garden Market on Serpentine Road, Pembroke, Hunt’s Food and Supplies on Khyber Pass, Warwick, Lindo’s Family Food on Middle Road, Warwick, Lindo’s Market on Watlington Road, Devonshire, Somers Supermart on York Street, St George, The Supermart on Front Street, Hamilton, Empire Grocery on North Shore Road, Devonshire, and HASCO Warehouse on Industrial Park, Southampton.
