Washington wins heat but misses semi-finals

Jesse Washington came first in his heat at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, today but finished outside the top 16 and did not advance to the semi-finals.

The 15-year-old set a Bermudian record for his age group in the 100 metres butterfly with a time of 59.03sec.

Lalanomena Andrianirina, of Madagascar, came second in 1min 3.26sec and Haris Bandey, of Pakistan, finished in 1:05.03.

Washington, who finished 23rd overall, returns to the pool on Thursday for the men’s 100 freestyle heats.

Meanwhile, sailor Cecilia Wollmann completed the first two races in the Byte CII regatta.

Wollmann finished fourteenth of 30 in the first race and was disqualified in the second. She has nine more races to go, culminating in the final race on Saturday.

In triathlon, Tyler Smith finished a respectable nineteenth out of 32 competitors in the men’s event with a time of 58:11, 3½ minutes behind winner Ben Dijkstra, of Great Britain.

Smith ran an exciting race, culminating in a sprint to the finish line against Belgian Romain Loop,

“Tyler had a quick T2 [second transition] but missed putting his helmet in his basket and was given a ten-second penalty,” Karen Smith, the triathlon team manager, said.

“He ran well off the bike and served his penalty on the second lap. His run time was 17:43 for 5K. Coincidently, he was running beside the Belgium athlete, who also had to serve a penalty.

“They served it together and then had to sprint 100 metres to the finish. It was an exciting finish and, although Tyler was outsprinted, he was very happy with his performance, which was a personal best time.”

Erica Hawley took 29th in her event, finishing in 1:08.14, a little more than eight minutes behind the winner, Brittany Dutton, of Australia.

Both Hawley and Smith will be competing in the relay event on Thursday.
