Hands-on approach: Members of the Bermuda Shriner’s Club working on their Bermuda Day Parade. Television presenter Amir X goes behind the scenes of May 24 floats in the latest episode of ‘Bermuda Highlights’

Oftentimes you blink and you’ve missed the chance to see the latest showcase of local art, fashion or culture.

But local model and presenter Amir X is hoping to give people another chance to catch the action taking place around the Island, through his television programme ‘Bermuda Highlights’.

The third instalment of the series will air on CableVision Channel 82 and WOW Channel 103, tomorrow at 8pm.

It’s an hour long programme that aims to highlight local talent at its best. One section goes behind the scenes for the Bermuda Day Parade to show people what goes into making some of the most popular May 24 floats. Another segment highlights what goes into making the Annual Hair Show, part of the City Fashion Festival, a success.

Amir X said he hoped viewers would tune in to learn something new about their Island culture. He’s confident if people take the first step to watch they will garner a greater appreciation for the local arts scene in Bermuda.

The programme starts off by following Bermudian artist Kendra Earls while she hosts art programmes at Wind-Reach, Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence and private lessons at her home.

“One of the subject matters is in reference to Alzheimer’s and how art can help as a form of therapy,” Amir X said. “It’s really beautiful going to various institutions and homes and seeing how people relate to art and the different outcomes it can have.

“At the end of the section we highlight some of the art work.

“Some of the participants have passed on in the short period of time since we got the footage but it’s still beautiful artwork at the end of the day and worth recognising.”

Ms Earls also gets to share her experience working with people and what she enjoys about her work.

Next, viewers are taken to the scene of an impressive fundraising event held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

Called ‘The Hue of Blue’, the event raised a large amount of money so that needy families could still send their children to summer day camp at BUEI.

Amir X said: “It was a very successful event and we show from the beginning of the evening when everyone arrives wearing their different shades of blue, to later when they dance the night away.

“It deserves to be highlighted because a lot of people are unaware of some of the positive things that go on throughout the Island,” he said.

“It’s important for people to be cognitive of the fact that charities need assistance, but they aren’t just asking for donations. They are making it fun by giving these events a theme that pulls people in and gives them a vested interest so that they can be a team player.”

‘Bermuda Highlights’ will air on a four-hour rotation, starting tomorrow evening at 8pm.
