Brangman handed plum role with developers

Junior Minister for Tourism and Transport Nalton Brangman has been appointed to a top job at the new Morgans’ Point development.

And last night Opposition leader Marc Bean said he was “shocked” that Sen Brangman had kept his junior Ministerial portfolio due to potential conflicts.

And he said the Senator should say how long he had been working for the development firm.

Morgans’s Point Ltd said that Senator Brangman had declared an interest to Government — and already removed himself from some activities in a bid to avoid a conflict of interest.

Morgan’s Point president Craig Christensen said: “His new role at Morgan’s Point has already precluded him from some specific activities and may also preclude him from other matters that may arise out of the development of the Bermuda Tourism Plan, which may be considered a conflict in his new role with Morgan’s Point Ltd.”

But Mr Bean said that the “specific activities” Sen Brangman had stepped away from should be revealed.

He added: “Senator Brangman should be free to pursue private sector employment, and we take no issue with Morgan’s Point Limited appointing him to a role they think he can fulfil.

“The Progressive Labour Party wholeheartedly supports the Morgan’s Point Project and will do what it can to ensure that it becomes a reality.”

But Mr Bean said: “However, we are shocked that Premier Michael Dunkley has allowed Senator Brangman to retain his Junior Ministerial portfolio of Tourism & Transport; a role that has already and will, in the future, put him in a position where direct conflicts between his private and public employment are sure to arise.”

And he added: “After the last 20 months, Bermudians should have expected Premier Dunkley to learn from the OBA’s mistakes and follow the ministerial code of conduct by reassigning Senator Brangman to a different portfolio.

“However it seems once again when it comes to good governance and transparency Premier Michael Dunkley and the OBA can talk the talk but refuse to walk the walk.”

Sen Brangman — who speaks on Tourism and Transport in the Upper House, as well as Education — was appointed to the role of Director of Infrastructure and Development by the Morgan’s Point developers.

Mr Christensen said Sen Brangman’s background in engineering, energy and design were vital to the success of the development project.

He added: “Nalton has been a huge advocate of the Morgan’s Point development since his appointment as Senator and has been very helpful in bridging the gap between the developers and the Government.

“His understanding and experience of infrastructure has been, and will continue to be, the greatest asset he brings to this project.

“We are delighted that Nalton accepted our offer and we look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with him.”
