Westerfield takes honours on opening day

Eddie Roque, on the outside, was in action at the weekend

The new harness racing season got off to a flying start at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre at the weekend.

When the dust had settled on the racing, Andrea Westerfield held bragging rights after recording the day’s fastest time.

The female driver saved the best for last, posting a 1:05/3 in the day’s final heat competing in the Free for All with Eddie Roque’s stallion, GV Crystal Ball.

Westerfield was among a trio of female drivers managing wins, the others being Keira Whited and Kirista Rabain, who drove to the winner’s circle with Charles Whited’s mare, Black & Mild, and Aaron Sims’ mare, Skyway Majestic — one of several new ponies competing this year.

Whited won the second heat in the Free for All while Rabain swept both heats in the 1:07/2-1:08/2 time bar.

Also making their presence felt on the opening day of the season were Tyler Lopes and Lucas Bridges, who navigated Iron Mike and Colonel’s Maestro out of the 1:10/4-1:12/4 time bar.

Getting a leg out of the 1:13-1:16 time bar was youngster Ryan Manders. The son of Driving Horse and Pony Club president Arnold Manders achieved the feat with gelding, A Touch of Red, which is another newcomer to the local harness racing scene.

Harness racing continues at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre on Friday night with the start of the 2014/15 Cablevision Series.
