Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell recently welcomed a group of US base veterans, returning to the Island for a reunion.

Mr Crockwell took part in a reception organised by US Consul General Robert Settje on Tuesday at the Consul General’s official residence, meeting with veterans and their families.

They were joined at the meeting by Governor George Fergusson, Deputy Governor Ginny Ferson, Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva and former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith among others.

Mr Crockwell urged the veterans to return to the Island again in the future, telling them: “It’s hard to believe that it has been almost 20 years since the Naval Bases closed, time sure does fly.

“Although there have been many changes to the former base since its closure, quite a bit of the area is recognisable. I do hope that you get the chance to visit the area before you leave.

“The bases may be gone, but our relationship with the United States is as strong as ever, and that includes our former US military friends who were once stationed here — those of you who are with us this evening and those who are here in spirit but could not make the journey this time.”
