A Somerset resident has spoken out about the degradation of her local neighbourhood.

The islander claimed that abandoned vehicles and discarded machinery plague the Scott’s Hill Road area of Sandys.

And she said derelict old properties were not only an eyesore but a hazard too.

“There are certain areas in Somerset that have not only gone downhill, but in fact have become increasingly dangerous,” the resident, who asked not to be named, said.

“There are smashed up cars and large machinery that has simply been abandoned only a few feet off the main road.

“Despite many complaints they have been ignored for years. No attempt has been made to remove them.

“On Scott’s Hill Road is a dangerous abandoned building, structurally unsafe where trash has collected and drugs are traded within a short distance of three schools often in broad daylight.

“It is a serious situation that needs to be addressed immediately.”

The resident has lived in the neighbourhood for more than 50 years.

And they claimed that many of the tourists that used the road as a thoroughfare to the ferry are seeing the ‘worst of Bermuda’.

“There are nice homes in the neighbourhood, yet no one has done a thing to clean it up. I have seen with my own eyes children smoking there,” the resident said.

“Scott’s Hill Road is a main route from the ferry so visitors are seeing firsthand the worst of what Bermuda has to offer rather than the best.

“Years ago this was an area that used to be attractive and looked after. That has changed now and it is a very sad state of affairs. It should not be ignored any longer.”
