Many find Bermuda Regiment rewarding

Ready for action: Bermuda Regiment soldiers set off on a practice run for a major waterborne assault on an "enemy" position at the Canadian Army's Land Force Central Area Training Centre Meaford (LFCATC Meaford) in southwestern Ontario.

Dear Sir,

I write in response to a letter printed yesterday from one of your readers. I am delighted that her brother is enjoying his service in the Regiment — he is currently two weeks into an eight-week attachment to the Welsh Guards in Kenya (part-funded by the UK Ministry of Defence) and reports back that he is relishing the experience and opportunity.

Many people do find their time in the Regiment rewarding and just over 50 per cent of the Regiment are volunteers, with the proportion increasing.

In addition to the benefits your reader points out, I would add: free public transport, discounts in over 30 businesses, testimonials of service to aid civilian employment (outlining skills and qualities that soldiers accrue which make them attractive employees, including: teamwork, management and self discipline), free healthcare while on duty, joining and performance bonuses ($500 and $750 per year respectively). The financial package amounts to nearly $15,000 for three months commitment (one of which is abroad) over three years, or nearly $20,000 for those who attend and complete the JNCO Cadre.

With wider rewards including: public service, adventurous training, travel, personal development and being part of a close knit team.

I am always willing to discuss ideas about making service even more attractive within the financial context we operate in, and I invite your reader to contact me direct at Warwick Camp.

Yours faithfully,

Lieutenant Colonel
