Aaron Williams, the Boulevard Blazers player-coach, is cautiously optimistic about his side’s promotion chances this season.

Boulevard cruised to a 3-0 victory over St David’s, who were relegated to the First Division last season, at Police Field yesterday, with goals from Dunn-ya Taylor, Niko Smith and Ian Coke.

St David’s had Kurtis Minors sent off for dissent with the score already at 3-0 late in the second half.

Williams said that although it was too early to read too much from his side’s impressive display, he believed that Blazers had the ability to be among the promotion contenders this season.

“I thought the guys pulled together really well,” said Williams, who was taking charge of Blazers for the first time.

“It’s been a long pre-season, we have worked really hard and it paid dividends today. Obviously [St David’s] have come back down and we weren’t too sure what to expect from them, but we came with the mentality that we had to put it in today.

“I think we have a chance this season; I try to stay humble in my approach but we have a good nucleus of players with some nice additions.

Williams added: “It’s been a bit nerve-racking being the player-coach, but I’m taking it one day at a time.”

Taylor opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with a close-range finish before Niko Smith doubled the lead in the 54th, finding the net from an acute angle.

Ian Coke completed the scoring in the 65th minute with a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

Young Men’s Social Club opened their season with a victory when they beat Paget Lions 1-0 at Bernard Park.

Kenneth Butterfield’s 52nd minute goal separated the two teams.

X-Roads and Devonshire Colts played to a 1-1 stalemate at Garrison Field.

Colts took the lead in the 40th minute when Vernell Lambe headed home.

But X-Roads hit back in the 57th minute through a fine individual effort from Tymon Daniels.
