Deloitte interns help out St George’s Foundation

A total of eight interns at financial services firm Deloitte have finished their placements.

And — in addition to hands on experience in the firm and visits to other companies — the students also took part community work with the St George’s Foundation, which promotes the east end of the Island as a tourist destination.

They also worked together as a team to draw up programme to manage volunteer management and create a campaign to better market St George’s and St David’s to tourists.

Janae Smith, who interned in alternative investments, said: “The industry visits were greatly beneficial. I never took the time to think about all the processes a company goes through to meet Bermuda Monetary Authority regulations, or the Bermuda Hospitals Board procurement procedures or even factors that local restaurants should consider before making decisions.”

Hannah Gibbons, also an intern, added: “I was able to learn more about Bermuda’s history, the importance of knowing your heritage and some of the important issues within our community.”

Consulting intern Jessica Burns said: “I have learned a tremendous amount about consulting, from the initial client engagement to research, fieldwork and the preparation of reports for clients.

“I derive great satisfaction from working in Deloitte’s highly positive and supportive team environment.”

Students also worked alongside other interns in the global firm from Brazil, the Bahamas, the US and Caymans as part of the firm’s global internship programme project challenge, which aims to provide participants with international exposure and develop a worldwide network of contacts.

Deloitte CEO for the Caribbean and Bermuda John Johnston said: “St George’s has the opportunity to raise awareness of itself as a heritage and cultural hub and Deloitte is pleased to work with the St George’s Foundation in this endeavour through our internship programme.

“We look forward to seeing the results of the interns’ project put into action.”

The intern programme is open to students interested in accountancy, actuarial science, technology, tax and marketing.
