Wells targets Millwall to launch season

Wells is motivated to repeat his previous heroics against Millwall

Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, is hoping that lightning strikes twice during his team’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Millwall at the John Smith’s Stadium today.

The last time the two teams met, Wells came off the bench and scored the game winner in a 1-0 home win to cap a spectacular club and league debut, 24 hours after joining Huddersfield from Bradford City for a record £1.5 million that made him Bermuda’s first million-pound footballer.

Now the former Dandy Town player is keen to repeat the dose when Huddersfield welcome mid-table Millwall to their West Yorkshire ground.

“The last time we played Millwall, I got off to a great start after moving to Huddersfield 24 hours prior,” Wells said yesterday. “It was great to score the winner on my debut and I would love to score tomorrow and help us get three points.

“Millwall is a team I know I have scored against and I can go into the game full of confidence knowing it is a side I am totally capable of doing the same thing against again tomorrow.”

Wells and his team-mates have not enjoyed the best of times lately, having managed only one win in eight outings, which has left Chris Powell’s team just two places off the bottom of the table.

“It hasn’t been the best of starts from us and we can only blame ourselves,” Wells said. “Obviously there have been management issues, but we haven’t been good enough on the pitch collectively as a team, while individually I know I haven’t reached my peak at all this season. But I am very eager to put in the work to get back to my best and get back to scoring goals and helping us win.”

Wells is sure that his team’s fortunes will change for the better. “I am quite confident we can turn it round,” he said. “I know when you are in these types of situations, you don’t get any luck; things go against you and you don’t get the calls you want.

“All we can do is keep battling through until we get that win and try and go on and win again. If we can do that, that could kick-start our season massively.

“We are all up for tomorrow’s game. We know it is a must-win game and we are hoping we can kick-start the season for the manager’s sake and for us a club.”
