St George’s hope to be sitting pretty

Top scorer: Simmons

St George’s Colts will find themselves perched at the top of the Premier Division heading into the weekend’s games if they can beat Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Recreation Club tomorrow night.

The top-flight newcomers, who have picked up six points from three matches, kicked off the season with a major upset, a 3-2 victory over the defending champions, Dandy Town Hornets, who are finding the going tough as they look to build on last season’s memorable campaign, winning the league title, FA Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy.

Just as Cougars struggled last season after their Triple Crown success, Hornets, too, are displaying signs of ‘second-season syndrome’, having lost all three of their league games this term.

Cougars, meanwhile, are trying to reach the heights of two years ago, with Andrew Bascome returning as head coach, but as Robin Hood showed last Saturday, the promoted sides have ambitions of their own.

St George’s picked up another three points last Sunday with a 2-0 win against a struggling Southampton Rangers side, and few would have put money on them leading the league champions by six points three games into the season.

Cougars have played all of their matches under floodlights so far and being at home should give them the edge over St George’s, who kept their first clean sheet at Southampton Oval last weekend.

Dominique Lambert, who joined St George’s from relegated neighbours St David’s Warriors, adds something extra to their attack. Defender Kiemo Bean, also from St David’s, and Kyle Williams, from Hamilton Parish, have also boosted their squad, which is mostly made up of the players who gained promotion last season under coach Kameron Fox. Macai Simmons leads the team’s scoring with three goals.

Cougars lost some key players from last season, including captain Chris Caisey to Parish, Jessie Seymour, who switched to Rangers, Kor-von Tucker to Dandy Town and Demetri Daniels, who moved to North Village.

Derrick Brangman has returned from Wolves to lead their attack along with Mark Steede and Domico Coddington.

Last season’s two relegated sides, Wolves and St David’s, will battle in the 7pm opener tomorrow.

Wolves have picked up two wins in their first three outings, while St David’s won for the first time last Sunday when Allan Douglas’s four goals led them to victory over Ireland Island Rangers.

Douglas, however, could be forced to stop playing football ahead of the Bermuda cricket team’s trip to Malaysia next Wednesday for the ICC Division Three Tournament.
