Woman guilty of machete attack

A 26-year-old woman was last night found guilty of a machete attack outside Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club.

Chanel Smith was remanded in custody after a jury convicted her of attacking Collisha Burch with the blade on November 9, 2013. She was also convicted of possessing a machete in a public place.

Her cousin, Dyshantee Crockwell, was convicted of lashing out at Ms Burch with a bottle during the same fight that erupted between two groups of women outside the cricket club.

Crockwell, 23, was released on bail last night after the jury returned their verdicts.

Both women are set to appear at the November Arraignments Session when a sentencing date will be set.

During the trial the jury heard how two groups of women came to blows outside Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club in November last year.

Ms Burch told the court that Smith had chopped down on her with a machete during the brawl, while Crockwell had hit her with a bottle.

Both defendants had denied the charges but were found guilty last night after more than eight hours deliberation by the jury.

Smith was convicted of wounding in connection with the machete attack on Ms Burch.

She was also found guilty of possessing a machete in a public place.

She was cleared of wounding another woman, Dante Allen, during the brawl.

Crockwell was convicted of wounding Ms Burch.

Ms Burch, 27, sustained a head wound that required staples, as well as serious injuries to her hand caused by the machete.

She told jurors that she sustained nerve damage to her hand because of the machete attack and lost the feeling in her index finger.
