Warwick Academy sets the standard

Warwick Academy once again dominated the Primary School swim meet held at the Aquatics Centre, National Sports Centre. Warwick won both the boys and the girls divisions in the Primary B meet. This year’s meet, for novice swimmers and those not affiliated to swim clubs, attracted competitors from 12 schools.

Warwick Academy were overwhelming winners in the boys’ division beating their nearest rival by 39 points. Warwick scored 108 points, with Saltus finishing in second place with 69. Somersfield Academy rounded out the top three with 38 points.

Leading the way for Warwick were James Lockham and Nicholas Massa, who won two events each. Massa won the under-10 boys 25 metres breaststroke and freestyle races. Lockham topped the podium in the over-10 boys backstroke and breaststroke. Alex Lockham won the under-nine boys breaststroke, while finishing third in the backstroke. Brandon Sangstar, from Saltus, also had a good day in the pool, winning the under-nine boys backstroke, while finishining fourth in the breaststroke and second in the freestyle. Warwick Academy also dominated during the relays in winning all four of the boys’ races.

Warwick edged past BHS in the girls B division by one point. Warwick topped the tables with 79 points, followed by BHS on 78 and Somersfield Academy on 45. Multiple winners in the girls division were Jenna Ferreira, of Warwick Academy, and Caroline Driscoll, from Saltus. Ferreira claimed first in the under-nine 25 metres backstroke and freestyle races. Driscoll won the over-10 version of the same two events.

Warwick also won overall Primary School A meet. Warwick again completely dominated the boys division, amassing a huge tally of 150 points. Saltus finished a distant second with 88 followed by Mount St Agnes on 48. Warwick Academy won all but two of the boys races. Harlan Watson Brown won the under-nine boys 25 metres butterfly and finished second in the backstroke, which was won by Keiran Smith, of Mount Saint Agnes. Warwick’s Flynn Watson Brown claimed first in the under-nine boys freestyle and breaststroke. Blake Oliveira won the under-10 boys butterfly and backstroke, while team-mate Drew Smith won the breaststroke and freestyle in the same division. In the over-10 boys division, Warwick team-mates Sam Williamson and Finn Mossely claimed four first places between them. Mossely won the freestyle and backstroke, while Williamson won the open individual medley and the butterfly.

BHS snapped Warwick’s dominance in winning the girls division. BHS won with 116 followed by Warwick with 106 and Saltus with 89. Adrianne Argent, of Warwick, dominated the under-nine girls division in winning the backstroke and the freestyle, while finishing second in the butterfly. Natalie Gazzard was the top performer in the under-10 division competing for BHS. She won the butterfly event and finished second in the freestyle. Warwick’s Jessica Bruton won the open medley race as well as the butterfly race.

BHS and Warwick Academy shared the overall honours at the Middle School swim meet. BHS won the girls division comfortably with 171 points. Warwick Academy finished second with 142 followed by Saltus with 105. BHS swept all the races in the under-13 division with Skyler Powell winning the 100 metres individual medley and 50 metres freestyle. Genevieve Lau won the 50 metres breaststroke and backstroke, while Maya Crockwell won the 25 metres butterfly. The over-13 division was more competitive, with Emma Harvey from Warwick Academy winning the 50 butterfly and the 100 individual medley. Ashley Irby, of Saltus, won the 50 freestyle, while BHS student Madison Quig won the 50 backstroke.

Warwick did win the boys division with 200 points. Saltus once again finished a distant second with 155, followed by Somersfield Academy with 70. Keagan Woolley, of Somersfield, won the boys 50 breaststroke and freestyle. Warwick’s Jack Harvey won the 25 butterfly and 100 individual medley. Team-mate Nick Pilgrim won the 50 backstroke. In the over-13 division, Somersfield had another double winner, with Nicholas Brando taking the 25 butterfly and 50 backstroke. Warwick’s Jude Mosley topped the podium in the 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.

Warwick were back to winning ways in the Senior School meet winning both the boys and girls divisions.

Warwick topped the girls division with 193 followed by BHS on 138 and Saltus close behind on 135. Warwick topped the boys division with 197 followed by Saltus on 169.

Maddy Moore, of Warwick Academy, won her two events in the under-16 division. She won the 50 buttefly and the 100 individual medley races. Jessie Thomas, from Saltus, won the freestyle event while finishing second to Moore in the fly. Megan Lau, of BHS, was edged out by Moore in the IM but soared to victory in the 50 breaststroke.

Warwick’s Anna Harrington was the only double winner in the over-16 girls division after she won the 50 freestyle and the 50 backstroke. Team-mate Susana Armano won the 100 IM and finished second to Courtney Day, of BHS, in the 50 breaststroke

Jesse Washington blew past the field in the under-16 boys division winning the 100 IM and the 50 freestyle. Somersfield Academy’s Padraic O’Shaughnessy finished second in the IM and also won the 50 breaststroke.

Philip Hagen, of Saltus, won the over-16 boys 100 IM and the 50 breaststroke. Ferdinand Arnold, from Warwick Academy, captured the backstroke event and finished second to Hagen in the breaststroke.
