Flying start for Hall at Telford

Spectacular save: Hall impressed on his Telford debut

Freddy Hall, the Bermuda goalkeeper, has reflected on his impressive debut for Telford United after helping the Vanarama Premier side win only their second league game of the season.

Hall pulled off a string of fine saves for the basement dwellers, who have the worst defensive record in the league, praising his team-mates for protecting his goal in their 3-1 win against high-flying Woking.

“We were very sound defensively for the entire game,” Hall told the Shropshire Star. “We gave them a few glimpses here and there but overall I didn’t really have too much to do.

“And it’s praise for the team. They really worked hard and protected me well. It was a difficult game to come into but the entire team was up for it and it definitely showed.

“It was nice coming into the team and being able to gel like that quickly.”

Hall was forced into action on a number of occasions and his spectacular save from a Josh Payne free-kick drew plenty of praise from Liam Watson, the Telford manager.

“I just reacted to it,” Hall said. “That’s my job and that is what the manager wants me to do, so I am going to do it to the best of my abilities.

“This is definitely a big opportunity for me to kick on in England. The set up at Telford is amazing and I am really enjoying it so far. Hopefully we can just keep on going.”

Striker Mike Phenix put Telford ahead after ten minutes before John Goddard, the Woking midfielder, levelled for the home side.

Telford restored their lead just minutes after the restart when Phenix tapped the ball home from close range.

Sam Smith, the Telford striker, extended their advantage and sealed a valuable three points for the visiting side late on with a neat finish.

Watson said that he believed Telford, who won promotion last season, were showing signs of getting to grips with life at the higher level.

“We’ve been lining the team up to make us hard to beat, and while I know it’s still a long, hard season, I actually think we’re growing into the league,” Watson said.

“Mike Phenix will get the headlines for his two goals, but Christian Platt was magnificent and Freddy Hall had a great debut in goal.

“But I shouldn’t be singling out individuals. This was a real team effort.”

Hall joined Telford from Oxford City, who play in the league below, the Conference North, where he made two appearances.

The 29-year-old started the season at Chester in the Vanarama Premier, where he made four appearances before parting ways with the club after a permanent deal collapsed.

Another Bermuda player making his debut at the weekend was Roger Lee, who played the full 90 minutes in Weston-super-Mare’s 2-0 home defeat against St Albans City in the Conference South. Weston-super-Mare are twentieth in the table.

Meanwhile Taurean Manders, the versatile Bermuda player, was voted man of the match in Sholing’s 1-0 win away to Bashley at the weekend. The match carried extra significance for Manders who played for Bashley last season.

Sholing are seventeenth in the Southern Football Division One South & West, the seventh tier of English football.
