Charity sets $40k fundraising target

Bermuda’s babies will be able to rest a little easier, thanks to an upcoming fundraiser by the Kiwanis Clubs of Bermuda.

The charity is calling on the community to come out for a special golf tournament benefit to be held next month so that the Island’s hospital can be furnished with a unique new incubator.

The $40,000 device, known as the Giraffe OmniBed, will ease the strain on both newborn children and their mothers, according to Kiwanis past lieutenant governor David Burgess.

“This machine will help to keep our children on the Island, instead of the babies having to go away and one of the parents having to stop working,” Mr Burgess told The Royal Gazette.

“Parents will be able to go to the hospital and be with their child, instead of having to travel, and I’m sure the insurance companies would appreciate it too.”

The paediatric equipment will provide babies with an incubator and a radiant warmer combined in one unit that can be placed comfortably in the same rooms as their mothers.

In order to buy it, the Kiwanis Clubs and competitors will take to Port Royal Golf Course at 8am on November 9 for a benefit tournament.

The tournament, which comes with a lunch, costs $140 per person or $560 per team — and the proceeds will be used to bring the Island’s first OmniBed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Mr Burgess, whose wife Altama is the current lieutenant governor for Kiwanis, said the group is dedicated to fundraising for children around the world. Other initiatives to cover the cost of the equipment include a fish fry and a jazz concert.

But golf tournaments have been Mr Burgess’s speciality since he and his wife joined in 1996, after he was recruited to organise his first benefit tournament.

“I liked what they were doing,” he said. “I’ve been putting on tournaments ever since.”

Both the lunch and the prize presentation will be held at Port Royal’s Bella Vista.
