Battered Deliverance open for visitors

Hurricane damage to the St George's replica of the Deliverance

The storm-battered replica of the historic Deliverance may look “more like how we imagine the Sea Venture”, St George’s Foundation director Charlotte Andrews said — but the ship is back open for business, with free admission while repairs continue.

Bermuda’s English settlers built the original vessel in 1610, along with the Patience, using pieces salvaged from the wreck of the flagship Sea Venture.

Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gonzalo delivered a “one-two punch” to the popular Ordnance Island attraction, Ms Andrews said, but the ship escaped serious damage from its fallen masts.

“Although Deliverance did lose her mainmast and mizzenmast and all their rigging, they fell in most fortunate fashion, missing the replica ship almost altogether,” she said.

“Damage on the upper decks and outer areas was minimal, and there appears to be no structural damage below decks whatsoever. The fallen masts have now been discarded but the crow’s nest, rigging, fittings and any other useful parts have been saved, much like how the Sea Venture castaways salvaged what they could from their wrecked vessel.”

The ship is open from 10am to 2pm on Monday to Thursday, as well as Saturday. Repairs are continuing at the ship’s stern and below decks.
