Town aiming stop the rot

Fit again: Minors

League champions Dandy Town Hornets will be hoping that two postponements of matches this week can work to their advantage as they travel to Devonshire Recreation Club on Monday night still looking for their first win in the league.

Town had the match with Cougars put back from last night to Monday to allow for the Dudley Eve Trophy semi-finals to be rescheduled for Thursday, but that, too, was called off owing to minor light damage at Devonshire Rec caused by Hurricane Gonzalo and, more significantly, the booking of the Progressive Labour Party delegates conference at the venue.

It all could work in Dandy Town’s favour as they attempt to end a three-game losing streak that has left them already seven points behind the Premier Division leaders.

Town have had Angelo Simmons and captain Brandon Minors back out training this week after missing the early part of the season and both could be included in the squad for the match against Cougars, while Damon Ming has been out with a fractured wrist picked up in their opening league match against St George’s.

Goose Gosling Field suffered damage from the storm, which has forced the postponement of tonight’s match between Flanagan’s Onions and Robin Hood.

Also off are all Corona League matches this weekend as well as tomorrow’s First Division encounter between BAA Wanderers and league leaders Boulevard. Tomorrow, the battle begins for the top spot, with North Village hosting bottom team Southampton Rangers at Bernard Park, while PHC take on Somerset at Southampton Oval and Hamilton Parish and St George’s meet in an east-end derby at Wellington Oval.

In the First Division, promotion-chasing sides Wolves, X-Roads and Devonshire Colts will be looking to capitalise on Boulevard’s weekend off. Wolves, joint leaders with nine points, play winless Paget on Monday while X-Roads make the trip to Lord’s to meet St David’s tomorrow and Devonshire Colts face Somerset Eagles at Police Field. Young Men’s Social Club play Ireland Island Rangers in the other match.
