Eagles leave it late

On the spot: Symonds, of Colts, scored a penalty

Devonshire Colts missed the opportunity to move into sole possession of first place in the First Division when Somerset Eagles scored a last-minute equaliser at Police Field.

In the only other match in the division, Young Men’s Social Club hammered Ireland Island Rangers 6-0 at Bernard Park to move ahead of Colts and level with leaders Boulevard and Wolves, whose game with BAA was postponed because of damage to Goose Gosling Field during Tropical Storm Fay.

Colts were heading to the summit when they led Eagles thanks to Lozendro Symonds’s sixth-minute penalty, but an 89th-minute penalty by Darrin Dowling denied them a deserved victory. Colts’ Justin Hayward was sent off for foul and abusive language as he disputed the decision by referee Tracy Adams.

The early promotion race got tighter when Social Club thrashed Ireland Rangers after leading 2-0 at the break courtesy of goals by Saki Tuzo in the sixteenth minute and Raymond Burgess in the 35th.

Kenneth Butterfield made it 3-0 from the penalty spot just after half-time before Tuzo scored his second three minutes later. Butterfield added his second in the 69th minute to make it 5-0 and Jerolamon Pitcher came off the bench to complete the six-pack with ten minutes remaining.

The match between St David’s and X-Roads at Lord’s was postponed.

Wolves have the opportunity to break the three-way tie for first place tonight at Devonshire Rec when they meet Paget. That match will be followed at 9pm by a Premier Division encounter between Devonshire Cougars and winless defending champions Dandy Town Hornets.
