The colder weather isn’t the only reason to grow your facial hair next month… men’s health fundraiser Movember is back.

The men of Bermuda are invited to grow their facial hair throughout the month of November to help raise funds and awareness of men’s health and prostate cancer.

But it’s not just the MoBros who can contribute to the cause – the charity is calling on ‘MoSistas’ to sign up and support their men in their lives while helping to promote men’s health at home, in the workplace and within their community.

Tara Soares, executive director of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre which organizes the event locally, said: “BCHC is committed to enhancing support and providing access for cancer and disease detection for the health of both women and men in the Bermuda community. Since 2010, a total of $329,000 has been raised locally through the Movember programme. All funds raised remain in Bermuda and are used to support local men’s health programmes and services.”

This year will mark BCHC’s fifth year participating in the worldwide event which sees some four million men participating and hundreds of millions of dollars raised.

Prostate cancer is most common to men – The American Society estimates that one in six American men will be diagnosed in their lifetime.

What’s more, black men are 60 per cent more likely to be diagnosed than white men.

Testicular cancer is also common, especially in young men. It is a highly treatable form of cancer with a cure of around 95 per cent if treated early. It is recommended that men begin talking with their doctors at the age of 45.

BCHC provides access to a free comprehensive library, including books, dvds and internet services and provides access to cancer information specialists through its partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cancer Information Service. Residents can call 232-2247 -to be connected with a specialist. The service is free and confidential. Call 236-1001 to learn more.

The centre will host a celebration on November 29 at Flanagan’s at 6pm to award the best moustaches in various categories.

You can register online by visiting www.movember.bm and signing up to be a MoBro.
