Storm damage a threat to series, says Watson

BNAA president Watson

The next two races of the Bermuda National Athletic Association’s (BNAA) Cross Country series are under threat because of the damage caused to two of the venues, Botanical Gardens and the Arboretum, by Tropical Storm and Hurricane Fay.

With those venues scheduled to host races on Saturday and then Friday, November 15, the National Championships on December 6 could be the final race of the series if suitable venues are not found.

Donna Watson, the president of the BNAA, said: “We had to cancel last weekend at Astwood Park and we’re looking to see if we can find another venue for the Arboretum,” Watson said.

“We’re still trying to find a location for the National Championships. Last year we used St George’s golf course but that is kind of overgrown.”

The storms felled quite a few trees at the Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, which are closed while repair work is carried out. Saturday’s race had been scheduled to be held at the Arboretum.

“This has definitely wrecked our cross country season, hopefully we can salvage it,” Watson said.

“A lot of the locations are closed, including the Botanical Gardens and Arboretum for three months. We’re trying to find alternative locations.

“They said Astwood Park could be cleared but I’m concerned that trees may be leaning and we’re talking about small children running.

“If we can find somewhere that’s safe then we will have it, if not then we’ll just have the Championships, but we just have to find a location.

“The series will probably be reduced to two more races if we can find locations. We’ve had two so far.”
