Crash victim was a ‘meticulous worker’

Tributes: Wayne Dears

Devastated work colleagues have paid tribute to a father of four who died after a motorbike accident.

Wayne Dears passed away last Thursday in hospital, two weeks after he was seriously injured in the crash.

Mr Dears, 51, had worked as the accounts administrator at Port Royal Golf Course and Ocean View Golf Club since 2003.

Greg Maybury, Port Royal’s director of operations, described Mr Dears as a “meticulous worker” and “passionate golfer”.

Mr Dears’s passing is the second sudden death to affect Port Royal after Melvin Smith was killed this summer when a bike crashed into the tent that he was sleeping in on Ferry Reach during the Cup Match holiday.

“Everyone depended on Wayne in the workplace and he took his responsibilities very seriously,” Mr Maybury told The Royal Gazette.

“He was a popular member of staff who was always focused on doing his job to the best of his ability.

“We lost another member of staff, Melvin Smith, earlier this year, so this has been a double blow. We really had not come to terms with his loss and this is a second shock.

“It’s affected everyone up here and we are struggling through it at the moment.”

The Port Royal director added: “Wayne loved his golf. He was a real snappy dresser on the golf course, too.

“Golf was a true passion for Wayne and he often brought his sons up here after they had done their homework.

“In his spare time, you would often see him practising on the course, getting ready for the next competition.

“He will be a huge miss at Port Royal and Ocean View.”

Mr Dears was rushed to hospital in the early hours of October 16 after the accident on South Road in Devonshire, near the junction with Tee Street.

He remained in a critical condition in ICU until he passed away last week.

His funeral is due to take place today.

Anyone with any information about the accident should call the investigating officer, PC Ian Scotton, on 295-0011.

Mr Dears’s passing marks the twelfth road fatality in Bermuda this year, after the death of Winston Jones on October 18.
