New wave of inductees to join greats

Hall of Famer: Parfitt

Some of the Island’s most decorated athletes will be inducted into the Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony at The Fairmont Southampton on December 7.

The Hall of Fame was established to honour those who have gained prominence in Bermuda sport or who have made a significant contribution. “The gala event will see perhaps as many as ten sports figures inducted,” Rick Richardson, the Hall of Fame chairman, said.

So far 48 athletes and teams have been inducted into the Bermuda Hall of Fame.

To be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame, athletes must have retired from their sport for a minimum of five years. The last Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held in 2009 at The Fairmont Southampton, however, the event was suspended the next year and has remained on the back burner until this year.

Richardson said that next month’s ceremony will have added significance after the Bermuda Government announced that it was closer to identifying a permanent building to house the Hall of Fame.

The impressive list of former athletes inducted in the Hall of Fame include cricketer Clarence Parfitt, sprinter Debbie Jones-Hunter, high jumper Clarance “Nicky” Saunders, footballer Clyde Best, sailor Eugene “Penny” Simmons, tennis player Heather Brewer-Segal and boxer Clarence Hill.
