BFA urges community to end the violence

Larry Mussenden, president of the Bermuda Football Association

The Bermuda Football Association has vowed to support Somerset Cricket Club in the wake of the shootings on Remembrance Day, Larry Mussenden, the BFA president, said.

In a statement, he also urged the community to do everything it can to stamp out anti-social behaviour.

After an emergency meeting, the BFA confirmed that tonight’s Premier Division match between Devonshire Cougars and Somerset Trojans has been put back to Sunday over safety fears after Tuesday’s shooting incidents outside the National Sports Centre at the end of the Dudley Eve Trophy final and two hours later at Somerset Cricket Club.

The timing of the BFA’s statement yesterday was unfortunate. Just thirty minutes later, it was reported that shots had been fired on Mount Hill Road, Pembroke.

“Our communities and individuals must do everything we can to stamp out anti-social behaviour and unlawful conduct, especially the use of firearms,” Mussenden said, adding that football “will always triumph over anti-social behaviour”.

“Together, with all our clubs, we will do our best to stamp out such behaviours and to show our youth there are many benefits to positive activity while violence can only lead to tragic consequences and long terms of imprisonment.

“We encourage such people to hand in any firearms, to declare an end to such violence, to come sit at the same table with us to work out a peace plan, to shake hands, to be free to travel up and down the Island and to love and respect each other as brothers and sisters of our beautiful Bermuda.”

The FA Cup preliminary matches called off on Tuesday at Devonshire Recreation Club have been rescheduled for November 18 and 25. Young Men’s Social Club will play Tuff Dogs next Tuesday at Devonshire Recreation Club at 7pm. Devonshire Colts will face Somerset Eagles in the later game at 9pm.

On the same day, at Goose Gosling Field, BAA Wanderers will meet Butterfield & Vallis United at 7pm.

On November 25, Wolves and Paget will meet at Devonshire Recreation Club at 8pm.
