Cougars re-sign ‘sharp’ striker Beach

Hornets exit: Beach, pictured scoring for childhood club Town, has joined Cougars for a second spell

Raymond Beach has severed ties with childhood club Dandy Town and returned for a second stint with Devonshire Cougars.

The prolific goalscorer opted to rejoin Cougars on a late transfer after spending several seasons at Town, who he captained to the Premier Division title, Dudley Eve Trophy and FA Cup glory during a successful stint at St John’s Field.

The three-times Bermuda Football Association MVP is eligible to play for his new club in their home match against Somerset Trojans on Sunday.

Beach helped guide Cougars to a Premier Division title and Friendship Trophy double in the 2004-05 season in his previous stint at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Andrew Bascome, the Cougars coach, hopes that the seasoned striker can rediscover the free-scoring form that made him a fans’ favourite during his previous stint at the club.

“I expect Beachy to do what he does and that’s score goals,” Bascome said.

“If we can get the ball to him in the right areas even on a bad day he can score. But we have to get the ball to him in the box.

“If we have the ability to do that, then nine times out of ten I’m sure he will put the ball away. He’s been attending our training sessions and is looking sharp.”

Beach played under Bascome during his previous spell at Cougars.

“From the first time that I coached Beach — about six years ago — he was very mature,” Bascome said.

“He comes to training very focused and doesn’t mess around. He just does what he has to do.”

After making a sluggish start to the season, Cougars have settled down nicely and are second in the Premier Division on goal difference behind PHC Zebras, the leaders.

Bascome is encouraged by the level of commitment that his charges have demonstrated so far.

“I am very pleased with my team to this point,” said Bascome, who is also the Bermuda coach. “The team’s commitment this season has been very good.

“At the beginning of the season we suffered two losses so I called a session and was a little concerned as to what the response would be.

“But the response from the players has been very positive and I am enjoying it.”

Tonight’s Premier Division match between Cougars and Somerset Trojans has been put back to Sunday over safety fears after Tuesday’s shooting incidents outside the National Sports Centre at the end of the Dudley Eve Trophy final between Dandy Town and Trojans, and later at Somerset Cricket Club.
