Artist Mikado Grant will this week hold his first solo show.

An exhibit featuring work by the 23-year-old opens in the Bermuda College art gallery on Thursday, and will hang through January.

Mr Grant says he got to where he is now thanks to a line of great teachers: Ayana Ming-Bean at Prospect Primary, Manuel Palacio at CedarBridge Academy and Edwin Smith at Bermuda College.

Now in his final year at the college, he’s hoping to further his studies at either the Art Institute of Philadelphia or the Art Institute of Atlanta.

“[Mr Palacio] is one of my role models in the art world and my art kind of resembles some of his art,” he said.

“He does abstracts and includes text [that] sometimes shows a deeper meaning or underlying story to it.

“It’s my first solo show. I am excited about it.

“I’ve always had pieces here and there and wanted to have a solo show but the schedule was always [filled].”

His ambition? To become a part-time artist and a full-time graphic designer.
