Village aim to shake off poor form

North Village Rams will seek to end a three-game losing streak when they travel west tonight to meet Somerset Trojans, 8pm kick off, as the much interrupted Premier Division campaign resumes.

Games were called off last weekend by the Bermuda Football Association over safety fears after the recent shooting incidents, including one outside Somerset Cricket Club, where four men were injured on Remembrance Day.

That prompted the club to host a community meeting where president Alfred Maybury vowed that persons with gang involvement would be banned from the ground.

Larry Mussenden, the Bermuda Football Association president, issued a challenge to those involved in antisocial behaviour after the BFA’s Special Congress Meeting last weekend at Devonshire Recreation Club.

“Instead of killing your brother, neighbour, cousin, friend or school buddy, lay down the weapons, extend a hand of peace and free your mind from the mental prison of antisocial behaviour,” said Mussenden.

Tonight’s match will enable the winners to move from mid-table and into a three-way tie for first place with PHC and St George’s.

The title race is wide open with just three points separating the top seven teams after PHC Zebras were beaten by Flanagan’s Onions in their last outing. On the same day, Village went down to St George’s at Wellington Oval.

Somerset also lost their last league match, 1-0 at home to Hamilton Parish, and this will be their first game since losing 3-0 to Dandy Town in the Dudley Eve Trophy final on November 11. Village will be led tonight by Keishen Bean, the division’s top goalscorer with six goals.

Another night match is scheduled tomorrow at Goose Gosling Field, where Flanagan’s Onions host St George’s, hoping to begin their climb up the table.

Onions, who lost to Trojans in the semi-finals of the Dudley Eve Trophy recently, have won just once in the league, though that performance against PHC was a major boost to their confidence.

Three matches are scheduled for Sunday, with Devonshire Cougars hosting PHC, Hamilton Parish taking on unbeaten Robin Hood at Wellington Oval and Southampton Rangers playing at home to defending champions Dandy Town, the only team without a win in the league.

In the First Division the top match will be at Police Field where unbeaten joint-leaders Boulevard Blazers take on third-placed Devonshire Colts.

Wolves, also on 12 points at the top of the table, play Ireland Island Rangers at Devonshire Recreation Club, while X-Roads and Social Club, fourth and fifth, meet at Garrison Field.

BAA Wanderers, the bottom team, host Somerset Eagles at Goose Gosling Field, while St David’s are away to Paget at Southampton Oval.
