Wolves advance past winless Paget

Symonds, right, scored in Colts' defeat

Wolves 2

Paget 0

Wolves earned a spot in the first round of the FA Cup, but they made it hard work against Paget Lions at Devonshire Recreation Club last night.

Wolves failed to capitalise on their possession in the first half, with their best chance falling to Steven Bremar early in the half when he put his effort wide of an open goal from a tight angle.

It was virtually one-way traffic for Wolves though Paget, who have not won a game this season, did go close midway through the half when Jahmori Beach shot straight at the goalkeeper from close range.

Better finishing could have seen Paget in front early in the second half when a long ball into the Wolves half by Jamie Raynor sent Y-Ron Astwood through down the right side only to see him put his shot into the side-netting with just the goalkeeper to beat.

A stalemate began to look the likely outcome before Wolves struck twice in the space of seven minutes midway through the half to settle the tie.

Sergio Richardson was fouled inside the penalty area by Damon Morris before Richardson converted the 65th minute penalty.

Bremar missed a sitter from five yards two minutes later when he lobbed his effort straight to Ajani Albuoy-Lovell, the goalkeeper, from close range with the goal at his mercy.

However, the striker made up for that miss in the 72nd minute when he collected a cross from the right from Richardson and superbly smashed his shot into the roof of the net.

n Somerset Eagles came from behind to beat Devonshire Colts in last night’s opening FA Cup preliminary match at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Colts, who ended Boulevard’s unbeaten run in the league on Sunday, had a good start when Eli Smith gave them the lead after just five minutes.

However, two goals in the space of three minutes turned the match around for Eagles, Kanhai Fray scoring the equaliser in the first minute of the second half and then Anwar Telford putting Eagles ahead for the first time three minutes later.

Treshun Smith wasted a good chance to make it 2-2 when he shot just wide of the near post after Sean Perinchief won the ball in midfield and sent Smith into the box.

Eagles cushioned their lead when Lamar Crofton met a cross into the box from a free kick by player-coach Marlon Rojas and planted his header home. Rojas, who had just come on as a substitute, was lucky to escape even a booking moments later when he deliberately elbowed Colts player Justin Maybury as the pair challenged for the ball.

Colts pulled a goal back in the 90th minute when substitute Lozendro Symonds powered his way into the penalty area to score.
