Lambe revels in new lease of life

Reggie Lambe in action for Toronto FC

Reggie Lambe can be forgiven for not shedding a tear at Paul Cox’s recent sacking as Mansfield Town manager.

Despite Cox bringing the 23-year-old to the Sky Bet League Two club on September 20, the Bermudian winger spent most of his time warming the substitutes’ bench.

He started just once, away at Stevenage, and was hauled off at half-time.

But things have changed.

With Adam Murray, the caretaker-manager, taking charge of the past two games — 1-0 wins at home to Plymouth Argyle in the league and at Concord Rangers in the FA Cup — Lambe has started and impressed with live-wire displays.

Mansfield, who are seventeenth in the table, are away at promotion-chasing Luton Town today and Lambe is determined to continue to take his chance as he bids to establish himself in English football.

“It’s always sad to see a manager leave but I didn’t really fit into the last formation,” Lambe, whose last club was Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, said.

“With the new one I have a much better chance and I want to take it and keep doing well for the team.

“It’s been tough on the legs this week, but we are getting all the rest we deserve and trying to be fit for Saturday.

“Every time a manager goes you feel you have to do more to impress. So everyone is very high and on top form.

“The formation is better for the striker as he has support around him. Vadaine Oliver wins every header so I know I can run off him. He is a presence up front and a handful for defenders. “I am working on finishing so I make better decisions in the final third and score more goals.”

For Lambe, the move to Mansfield is now starting to reap rewards and kick-start his career after an underwhelming spell in Canada at an admittedly-struggling club.

The Bermudian has tasted the rough and tumble of English football before with spells at Ipswich Town and Bristol Rovers. However, his new team-mates have informed him that a trip to Kenilworth Road, an old-fashioned ground with tight confines, will bring new challenges today.

“I can’t say as I am not used to playing in this league but the boys are telling me it will be a tough test so I am getting my head around it,” he told the Mansfield Chad. “I am looking forward to it and we will try to get a win.

“They are one of the favourites, but we need to come back with three points or at least a point.

“It sounds ideal to play in front of their fans and we need to silence them and play our own game. If we can get a win on Saturday, we will be flying. We are looking forward to it and that’s what we are here for. Then we can go to Cambridge [in the FA Cup] and get a win or bring them back here and have our own fans behind us.”

Mansfield have said they hope to appoint a new manager next week with Murray reportedly so far unwillingly to throw his hat into the ring.

Meanwhile, debate continues to rage as to why Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, is not in the starting line-up more regularly.

Huddersfield, who drew 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday last time out — despite a lively cameo off the bench from Bermuda’s Wells — travel to Bolton Wanderers in the Championship today.

“They have had a revival under Neil [Lennon] and they are in decent form,” Chris Powell, the Huddersfield manager, said.

“But they are below us in the table and we want to keep it that way. To do that, we have to perform. I want another result on the road like the one we got at Wolves [a 3-1 win). That’s important because our home form has been strong, so to add away points would be a real plus.”
