Russell bags brace in Hood win

At the double: Hood striker Russell

Robin Hood 4

St George’s 1

Antwan Russell scored a brace as Robin Hood returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over St George’s in the Premier Division at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.

Hood, who suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend against Hamilton Parish, opened the scoring with a fifth-minute penalty, converted by Antwan Russell who won the spot kick after being brought down by a pair of St George’s defenders.

St George’s were back on level terms two minutes later, though, when Damon Darrell executed a neat lob over the advancing Jason Simons, the Hood goalkeeper.

Shortly before half-time Hood restored their lead when defender Alex Martin headed home from close range after meeting Joseph Pereira’s free kick from deep inside the St George’s half.

Hood began to dominate possession after the break as their opponents became increasing disorganised and lacking in composure.

It came as no surprise when the home side extended their lead after Liam Evans superbly drilled a low shot from the edge of the box past Charles Marshall Jr, the St George’s goalkeeper, on 61 minutes.

St George’s Dominique Lambert forced a smart save from Simons with a strike from an acute angle after a mazy dribble, while at the other end Tre Dill missed a glorious chance after being teed up by Evans, his weak shot cleared off the line.

Hood seemed capable of scoring at will with Shaun Brown striking the post after a goalmouth scramble, the loose ball falling invitingly for the lively Russell who made no mistake with a calm finish on 79.

Tevahn Tyrell, the Hood substitute, went close to adding another goal before the final whistle, with his speculative effort from long range cannoning off the crossbar.

Kyle Lightbourne, the Hood coach, said that he was encouraged by the number of chances his side had created, particularly during a one-sided second half.

“The second half St George’s dropped off and I thought we passed the ball about a lot better than we have in recent times,” Lightbourne said.

“It’s been a few games since we had won, drawing a few and losing last week, so it was important for us to win today.

“As a newly promoted team it’s important not to lose too many games because then your confidence can start going.”

Lightbourne added: “It was nice to see a few other guys chip in with goals to tonight. Antwan will always score goals at this level and I felt we could have scored a few more against St George’s.”
