A life that should be studied by everyone

24 November 2014

Dear Sir,

I wish to commend Ira Philip on his very thorough and in-depth Obituary for AC “Artie” Black, which deservedly occupied a full page in The Royal Gazette (Saturday, November 22, 2014).

The extent of Mr Black’s interests, involvements and commitments was truly remarkable and the recognition he was accorded for this work and availability to numerous and very diverse local groups and organisations was exceptional. His investiture by the Queen of the MBE was really the icing on the cake, in that it was earned for “Artie’s” outstanding public services in Bermuda and for Bermudians.

In order to preserve his legacy of service to others, I would suggest that the Ministry of Education include an outline of “Artie’s” life-story as an addition to any text book in local secondary schools covering the history and culture of Bermuda so that the younger generations of students may be made aware of the beneficial impact of just one such man and hopefully be inspired to follow in his footsteps.

Sincerely

Maurice Hankey
