Young Men’s Social Club got the job done at the second time of asking after defeating Tuff Dogs in last night’s FA Cup preliminary round replay at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Goals from Nathan Simons and Raymond Beach sealed the victory over the Dogs, one of two Corona League teams, along with B&V United, who accepted the Bermuda Football Association’s invite into the competition.

Social Club, who rescued a 2-2 draw against Tuff Dogs at Devonshire Recreation Club a fortnight ago to force the replay, made no mistake this time around with a convincing display. They made a strong start to the match, scoring in the fifteenth minute when Nathan Simons executed a lobbed finish over the goalkeeper.

It took until the 63rd minute for Social Club to extend their lead when midfielder Raymond Burgess headed home from close range, moments after Che Woolridge had struck the post directly from a corner kick.

Troy Lewis, the Social Club manager, was then ordered from the bench after venting his anger over a refereeing decision by Anthony Bailey.

Tuff Dogs, the Corona League leaders, gave a good account of themselves and created chances of their own with Eduardo Correira and substitute Marcel Dill both going close late on.

Michael Smith, the Social Club captain, admitted that he was relieved his side a sidestepped a potential banana skin by defeating the Dogs.

“It was a hard game, just as it was in the first match when they took us all the way,” Smith said.

“The early goal made it a little easier for us tonight. We knew by the second half that we would wear them down a bit, so it was important that we went ahead and then we could relax. I feel when we score first we tend to relax and play a bit better.”

Smith, whose side are sixth in the First Division, added: “We’re definitely looking to give a good showing of ourselves in the competition. That can only help our league form.”
