Fletcher sets national record

Burch and Fletcher in Doha

Julian Fletcher, the Bermuda swimmer, has set a national record in the 100 metres breaststroke at the FINA Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Fletcher, who represented the Island at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer, clipped a second off of the previous record set by Chris Flook in 1992, finishing in a time of 1min 2.04sec.

Since turning professional after the Games, Fletcher has moved to Los Angeles to train full-time with esteemed coach David Salo at the University of Southern California.

Fletcher captured gold medals in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at this summer’s Caribbean Island Championships in Barbados.

Roy-Allan Burch will swim his signature event, the 50 metres freestyle, at the Championships tomorrow.

The SwimMac Carolina Elite Team swimmer placed fifth in the final of the 50 metres freestyle at the recent Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico, shattering his own national record in the 50 butterfly.

Burch swam 24.77 sec in his qualifying heat, shaving nearly a second off his previous best of 25.60 at the 2012 Caribbean Island Championships.
