National Championships set for CedarBridge

Tyler Christopher, right, will meet Chuck Morgan at CedarBridge this weekend

History will be made when CedarBridge Academy hosts the first Bermuda Boxing National Championships on Saturday night.

The amateur card consists of six bouts spread among as many weight classes.

The aim of the event, sanctioned by the Bermuda Boxing Federation (BBF), is to prepare local amateur boxers for a host of qualifiers, which act as qualifiers for major international events.

“The Bermuda Boxing Federation is eager to promote youth talent and support them in preparations for various upcoming boxing events, which are qualifiers for the Olympics in 2016 and Youth Olympics in 2018,” the BBF said in a statement.

Upcoming Olympic and Youth Olympic qualifiers include next year’s AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Championships in Taipei, Taiwan, the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada, the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in St Petersburg, Russia, the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa, and the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Saturday’s card will pit Trace Easton against Corey Boyce in a heavyweight bout.

Boyce will enter the ring with his confidence high from last month’s TKO victory over Canadian Drew Geoghegan on the undercard of Teresa Perozzi’s IBA world middleweight title bout at The Fairmont Southampton.

Tyler Christopher and Chuck Morgan will face each other in a middleweight bout while Naizari Roberts and Lejai Tucker meet in a featherweight bout.

Andre Lambe, who suffered a loss to Jeron Gunness in his previous fight last month, is scheduled for a light welterweight bout with an opponent yet to be determined.
