Cougars left fuming

Controversial winner: Cougars v Trojans

Devonshire Cougars 1

Somerset Trojans 2

Devonshire Cougars were left fuming after a controversial goal by Jaz Rattery-Smith late on earned Somerset Trojans a victory at Devonshire Recreation Club.

In the 85th minute, with the score at 1-1, Trojans appeared to return the ball back to Cougars after the home side had halted their attack with a Trojans player injured in the box.

However, Ratteray-Smith, the Trojans forward, intercepted the ball en route to Che Brangman, the Cougars goalkeeper, before dribbling the ball into an empty

net.

Understandably, the Cougars players and coaches were apoplectic with tempers then boiling over as the home side’s players targeted Rattery-Smith during the remaining minutes of game in an attempt for retribution.

After the final whistle, tempers flared and players and coaches from both teams had to be separated.

Derrick Brangman gave Cougars the lead in the 47th minute with a neat header before Shaquille Bean, the Trojans goalkeeper, levelled with a penalty kick in the 80th minute.

Andrew Bascome, the Cougars coach, said: “They had a man down in the box ... we thought there was going to be a drop ball after play had stopped but they [Trojans] decided to kick the ball back to us.

“Our players let the ball run through and then [Rattery-Smith] went and scored. I thought the referee should have stepped in. It was very unsportsmanlike and wasn’t in the spirit in the game.”
