Smith tries to make breakthrough in MLS

Smith arrives in Puerto Rico today to meet the MLS coaches and scouts before the action heats up in earnest tomorrow

Jonté Smith, the Bermuda striker, is one of 19 players who have been invited to participate in the four-day Major League Soccer Caribbean Combine in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, which starts today.

The players will compete in front of MLS scouts for the opportunity to earn an invitation to the adidas MLS Player Combine in Fort Lauderdale, starting next Thursday.

Smith arrives in Puerto Rico this afternoon to meet the coaches and scouts before launching into a practice match tomorrow.

All invitees will be eligible for selection in the SuperDraft held on January 15 in Philadelphia.

Smith helped Kemi Kings to achieve promotion from Finland’s Kakkonen North league last season and was the league’s top scorer with 23 goals. He joined the third-tier club on loan from Crawley Town, the Sky Bet League One side, in March before signing a deal that kept him in Finland until the end of the season.
