Here are realistic New Year wishes

House in disorder: Parliamentarians need to improve behaviour

January 2, 2015

Dear Sir,

New Year wishes, rather than resolutions, begin to be realistic after reading the Premier’s comments in today’s paper.

I was thinking the Speaker of the House, needs to bring in his teaching skills to stop the Parliamentarians acting like spoilt three to four year olds. This past year, the conduct in the House leaves a lot to be desired and it is time that the elected members realize they are there to do the people’s business. Your correspondent, Al Seymour, very ably covered the current confrontational approach which exists.

My wish is that they start acting and debating in a responsible manner. It is also necessary for people to be responsible for their actions. The Auditor General has made comments about Port Royal Golf Course, the Dame Lois Brown Evans court building, and the cruise terminal at dockyard. All of these (to mention a few) were way over budget and are partially responsible for the debt the country is experiencing, but, no-one is being made accountable.

The road deaths are far too many and my wish is that we all start driving responsibly and not at 50K+, which is the norm. I heard a lot of people complaining on the talk shows about the speed bumps on East Broadway, with taxi drivers complaining about them causing problems to their radios and meters.

I found that if one slows down and goes over them at 10K there is very little shaking in the car or motor bike, however, if one hits them at 35K, then it feels as though everything is shaken out of the sockets.

In spite of all the deaths and the way it affects the families of the deceased, people are not taking notice. Higher penalties and confiscation of the vehicle for excessive speed needs to be introduced with repeat offenders being banned for life. If the death toll is to be reduced, strong measures are required. Just hearing the evening news and there is yet another road incident, very few of them are accidents.

A happy and healthy New Year to you and your readers,

Yours faithfully
