Wells praised by Powell

No 1: Wells celebrates his goal against Watford with team-mate Jacob Butterfield

Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, has been praised by Chris Powell, the club’s manager, after scoring his eleventh goal of the season against Watford in the Sky Bet Championship at the weekend.

The 24-year-old, who has been linked with a transfer-window move to Barclays Premier League side Burnley, marked the first anniversary of his club-record £1.3?million move from League One side Bradford City with the game’s opening goal in the 52nd minute.

James Vaughan and Joel Lynch clinched the 3-1 victory after substitute Odion Ighalo’s equaliser at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Wells tweeted: “A year at Town starting with a goal/ending with a goal. Hope to have an even better 2015.”

Powell added: “Nahki’s hold-up play and some of his touches were outstanding. He can really excel at this level.

“We are working on him and Vaughany as a pair, and we need them to fire.”

Vaughan, Town’s top scorer in both of the last two seasons, has netted twice since his return from a calf injury.

Powell, meanwhile, sprung to the defence of goalkeeper Alex Smithies, whose mistake gifted Watford their goal.

“Alex apologised afterwards, but he has saved us numerous times this season,” Powell said.

“He has earned us points on occasions and will continue to do so.”

Huddersfield, who are fifteenth in the table, are away to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Rai Simons, the Bermuda striker, made his first league start of the season for inform Ilkeston away to Rushall Olympic in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier at the weekend.

Simons, whose performance was described as “irrepressible” by the Derby Telegraph, helped his side to a 3-1 win.

Ilkeston, who are second in the table, have won 12 of their last 13 matches. The other was a draw.
