West claim the bragging rights

Silky skills: Boddington, East MVP and hat-trick hero, dummies a shot as Lara Backeberg, from BHS, turns her back during the Primary Girls All-Star game at the NSC

The West won four of the six matches during the Bermuda School Sports Federation annual All-Star matches last Saturday at the National Sports Centre.

Nearly 200 boys and girls were on display representing their schools during an entertaining afternoon of school football. The matches were attended by Chris Parsons, the Thomas College coach, who is looking to add more Bermudians to his squad.

PRIMARY GIRLS

East 5 West 2

The East team overwhelmed the West with a comfortable 5-2 victory spearheaded by Jailyn Boddington from East End Primary who scored a hat-trick.

The East took a 4-0 lead into half-time but the West scored two goals through Purvis Primary’s Che’Chulae Dowling and Emily Cabral before the East sealed the match. Rose Simmons from St George’s Preparatory School and Daaimah Millet from Harrington Sound Primary scored the other East goals. Cabral and Boddington were crowned the match’s MVP.

PRIMARY BOYS

West 7 East 5

The Primary School boys game provided an entertaining 12-goal match.

The West took an early lead through Eijaz Shakir from Purvis Primary. The West got goals from Paget Primary’s Ajani Burchall and Deniche Hill before the East could get on the scoresheet. Hunter Outerbridge from Somersfield Academy then equalled his Knockout Cup performance by bringing the East back into the match by scoring another hat-trick.

Keyni Mills from Somerset Primary scored to give the West the lead which they did not relinquish.

The West got two second-half goals from David Blankendal from West Pembroke Primary and an own goal. The East got two second-half goals from Sincere Hall of Francis Patton. The MVPs for the match were Burchall for the West and Lezi Outerbridge for the East.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS

West 5 East 2

The West were favoured in the girls’ middle school match and they did not disappoint as they led throughout. The league’s top scorer LeiLanni Nesbeth from Saltus Grammar School led the charge for the West with two goals. The West also got goals from Sandy’s Secondary Middle School pair Trinae Edwards and Jya Ratteray-Smith. An own goal rounded out the West goals.

The East’s goals were scored by Nia Christopher from Dellwood Middle School. The West MVP was Brijette Basden from TN Tatem Middle School. The East MVP went to Whitney Institute’s Druw Bascome who played out of position in goal.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS

West 2 East 0

The West goals from MVP Jeze Butterfield from Sandys Secondary Middle School and Senoj Mitchell from Warwick Academy in their 2-0 win over the East. Goalkeeper Jacob Estis from Mount Saint Agnes earned the MVP award.

SENIOR SCHOOL GIRLS

East 7 West 1

The Senior Girls played under a different format, with both sets of players being asked to train together. The players were then divided into two equal teams.

The Blue team scored early and often, defeating the Red team 7-1. Berkeley Institute’s Teiyah Durham and Warwick Academy’s Sophia Gilliat scored two each for the Blues.

Zahra Gibbons, the MVP from Berkeley Institute, an own goal and a strike from Symira Lowe-Darrell from CedarBridge Academy accounted for the other goals.

The Blue teams defence led by CedarBridge Academy’s goalkeeper Micah Pond was just as impressive as their attack in keeping the usually free-scoring pair of Aailyah Nolan from Berkeley and Deshae Darrell from CedarBridge Academy at bay. Nolan eventually scored the lone goal while Ember Butterfield was the team’s MVP.

SENIOR SCHOOL BOYS

West 3 East 1

The West defeated the East 3-1. Omari Tucker, the MVP from Warwick Academy, scored twice to lead the West to victory, while Berkeley Institute’s Jahtino Richardson-Martin scored the other. Nicholas Araujo, the East MVP from Saltus, scored their only goal.
