Stephen Allen and Jennifer Alen romped to victory in the Local Men’s and Women’s KPMG Front Street Mile races.

Both runners won convincingly after making a surge on the home stretch and showing the chasing pack a clean pair of heels the rest of the way.

Allen bided his time running among the lead bunch before making the decisive break with the finish line within sight and going on to capture a third successive men’s title in 4min 44.85sec.

“I am definitely happy to achieve three wins in a row, it’s a marvellous feat,” the Jamaican policeman said. “The plan was to run a good race and respond to how the other guys react.

“Darico [Clarke] is fast over 200 to 400 metres, so in the last third I decided to kick in.”

Clarke was second in 4:51.17 while Christian Myers rounded off the podium in 4:56.46.

The mile always seems to bring the best out of Allen, and this year was no exception.

“I really enjoy this race and it is the one that I have done the most,” he said. “It’s the only race I do that’s held at night and the atmosphere is always great. It’s always a special occasion.”

Allen’s time was three seconds faster than his winning time 12 months earlier but 10 seconds slower than his personal best over the distance.

“Not everyday you are going to run PBs,” he said. “But it was faster than last year and so I am very pleased with that too.”

Also basking in the limelight was Alen who marked her return from injury by claiming Ashley Estwanik’s vacant crown to celebrate yet another triumph in the event.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been out racing, so tonight was just to see where I’m at,” she said. “I had an injury to the end of November, so I only started training in December.

“I haven’t got in the training that I wanted to, so tonight was just to come out and see how well I could run and I am pleased with my result.”

Alen stopped the clock at 5:20.19 which is shy of her personal best.

“It wasn’t one of my fastest times,” she said. “But that’s all right because at the end of the day I came out and won and I am happy with that.”

Alen broke away with less than a quarter of a mile to go and never looked back.

“Coming to the Cabinet Building I started to pick up pace and I thought Rose-Anna [Hoey] was right there behind me, so I kept pushing till the end,” she said. “The conditions were fantastic and the crowd was great. They really spurred you on.”

Hoey finished second in 5:28.34 followed by Tamika Williams, Bermuda’s 800 metres record holder, who blew past Deon Breary down the final stretch to snatch third in 5:36.45.

If it was any consolation, Breary won the Women’s masters title in 5:42.19 followed by Vivienne Lochhead who came second in 6:14.31, and Zina Jones, third in 6:45.85.
