Hood and Hornets to renew hostilities

Game on: Antwan Russell runs towards coach Kyle Lighbourne after scoring his side's third goal in the Friendship Trophy final against Dandy Town. Hood will face Town in the quarter-finasl of the FA Cup

Robin Hood and Dandy Town, the defending champions, have been drawn against each other in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, three weeks after their Friendship Trophy final ended in controversy with Hornets stripped of the title after fielding an unlisted player.

Hornets won the match 4-3 but moments after the final whistle it was discovered that their second-half substitute, striker Kevin Hurdle, was not listed on the team sheet.

Town were subsequently stripped of the title by the Bermuda Football Association, as Hood were awarded their first major trophy.

Hood are yet to receive the trophy from the Bermuda Football Association, but yesterday Derek Stapley, the Hood president, confirmed they preferred a quiet ceremony.

“We don’t want to make a big thing of it because of the circumstances and out of respect for Dandy Town,” Stapley said.

“We’ve been in touch with the BFA and they were originally going to do it on Monday but it was too short notice, so we suggested next week or alternatively collect the medals and hand them to the guys.” Yesterday, the two teams were pitted against each other for the February 7 match at Goose Gosling Field at 9pm, the only one of the four matches not awaiting a replay after three first-round matches on Sunday ended in draws.

“As I said after the Friendship Trophy final we hope to meet Dandy Town in another cup final in the coming years but we would prefer to be meeting them in the FA Cup final this year instead of in the quarter-finals,” Stapley said.

“They are a very good side and will be the favourites going into this tie because they have been playing very well this season and they are certainly a tough opponent for us.

“The Friendship Trophy final was a great game and we showed that we had the heart and desire to come back from 3-0 down to tie the match before Town’s late strike.

“Our squad is coming together nicely and they will be up for this match and I know Kyle [Lightbourne] and the guys will give it a great shot and hopefully we can emerge as winners.”

The other three quarter-finals will be played on Sunday, February 8.

Somerset Trojans will meet the winners of the replay between First Division sides Boulevard and Wolves who drew 3-3 last weekend. That replay will be at Devonshire Recreation Club on February 3 in a double-header which will also pit St George’s against Southampton Rangers.

That will not be good news for Kameron Fox, the St George’s coach, who was clearly looking forward to meeting Rangers in the replay at Wellington Oval.

However, the lack of available Sundays made it impossible for the BFA to play the replays on a Sunday, as PHC and St David’s will play their replay at Somerset Cricket Club next Wednesday to determine who meets Flanagan’s Onions in the quarter-finals.
