We need to go shopping

After years of trial and error, you finally have your style figured out.

Your partner on the other hand ... is still clueless.

The question then beckons: how do you get them to ditch their unrefined look for something more attractive?

Former Olympic diver Katura Horton-Perinchief, 31, said she would help her unfashionable mate pick out some more trendy wardrobe items.

“That’s exactly what I would do, I would take him shopping and get him something new to wear,” she said.

“You can’t go to certain places if you don’t look the part. I think some guys just need a little guidance. I don’t think fashion is at the forefront of their minds. With that being said it isn’t at the forefront of my mind either most of the time.”

She described her style as “bright and cheery” and said she finds inspiration from designers like Karen Millen.

“She’s my favourite designer because she uses bold colours and has really sleek and simple designs that are all statement pieces,” she said.

Nicole Harrison said she would be more direct with a boyfriend if she didn’t like his style.

“I would probably say ‘Hey, we need to go shopping’,” she said.

“I think a man’s dress sense is quite important. They don’t have to be trendy, but they just need to have their own style and really good shoes. For me, it’s all about the shoes. That’s actually one of the first things I look for in a man.”

When it comes to her own style, she likes to sport bright colours and add in a few unexpected twists.

“I hate when everything matches,” she explained. “I will never ever look in a store window and replicate it exactly. I specifically like to have something more unexpected.

“So I will usually throw on a funky jacket. I love sparkles on the weekends when I am going out with the girls, so I might put on a glittery jumpsuit with funky feathered shoes.”

Fashion buyer Katie Dunmore, 31, said she would be tactful.

“Luckily my boyfriend doesn’t dress badly but if I was with someone who did I would advise him, but in a kind way and say, ‘How about you try this?’

“I would give suggestions rather than tell him what he is doing wrong,” she said.

Ms Dunmore described her style as contemporary with a bit of an edge. “For me that means pushing the boundaries yet staying on trend,” she said. “I get inspiration from doing research on the market, but I also follow fashion blogs and the media as well.”

Entrepreneur Cushi Ming, 28, said he would try and subtlety introduce new pieces into his girlfriend’s wardrobe if she needed some guidance.

“I would also take her out to places that require her to try something more than she already has in her closet,” he said. “That would give her a reason to get a new piece of clothing. I would also maybe encourage her to try new things with her style.”

Mr Ming said he’s inspired by the colours found in nature. He also keeps up with style blogs and reads GQ every now and then.

“For the most part I try to inspire myself,” he said.

Travis Caines said that trying to change someone’s style wouldn’t be easy.

“I think clothing is something of an expression of self and trying to change someone’s style is virtually impossible,” the 39-year-old said. “More than likely I would deal with the person’s style as it is.

“I wouldn’t be able to take her to buy clothes. It would be insulting.

“But I also don’t think I would date someone without some sense of style in the first place,” he continued. “My wife is like me. She is simple and keeps it classy. Plus, she’s beautiful so it meshes well.”

The paralegal described his style as comfortable and casual.

“I buy clothes that will enable me to wear them forever, not necessarily for the moment,” he explained. “I actually get a lot of inspiration from my brothers, Wayne and Dwayne Caines. They are very stylish.

“Wayne was away in school in England and he brought back some nice pieces with him. I would try to steal them from his closet, so my style of dress definitely grew more and more. He introduced me to a European flair and it’s been like that ever since then.”
