St David’s still hopeful, says Minors

Difficult task: Minors

St David’s face a long trip to the West End and an uphill battle when they meet PHC Zebras in their FA Cup first-round replay at Somerset Cricket Club tonight.

St David’s did well to take PHC into extra time before losing 2-1 at Lord’s, only to have the Bermuda Football Association rule that the result would not stand because the match should not have gone into extra time.

Otis Minors’s side will get a second chance to pull off an upset, although their squad has been depleted for the replay, with six players either injured or unavailable.

“To be honest it [replay] comes at a bad time because we have so many players out,” Minors, the St David’s coach said. “In the first match I was extremely pleased with the way the team executed our game plan.

“We played at 12pm while the other teams played all their games at 3pm. Also being at Lord’s worked in our favour, and we trained all week with that in mind.

“If we can come away with something tomorrow night I’ll be happy.

“The first match against PHC just shows the calibre of the team.”

PHC will be hoping to put the disappointment of Sunday’s loss to North Village behind them. Zebras reopened their field, PHC Stadium, after 17 years but the homecoming did not go as planned as they were beaten 3-1.

It was their third straight loss in the league and they will also be without left back Johnny Ball for the replay after he dislocated his shoulder on Sunday and was taken to hospital. The winners of tonight’s replay will meet Flanagan’s Onions in the quarter-finals next month.

Somerset Eagles will meet Young Men’s Social Club in a First Division make-up match at Somerset Cricket Club tonight at 7pm.

Two other FA Cup first-round replays will be held next Tuesday at Devonshire Recreation Club when Boulevard play Wolves, which guarantees one First Division team in the quarter-finals.

St George’s and Southampton Rangers meet again in the 9pm match. Somerset will face the winners of Boulevard and Wolves while North Village will be at home to either St George’s or Rangers in the next round.
