Nine-man St David’s smacked for six

PHC scorer Robinson

PHC 6

St David’s 1

PHC Zebras blew away nine-man St David’s on a rainy night in Somerset, but only after St David’s Warriors shocked them with the opening goal midway through the first half.

The muddy conditions did not allow for any fluent football and although Zebras went close after just five minutes when Cecoy Robinson, the team’s captain, smashed a shot against the base of the post, it was St David’s who scored with their first serious raid in the 20th minute when striker Jamal Woodley scored after a corner on the left.

Thoughts of an upset for the First Division side did not last long, however, as PHC equalised within three minutes when Kevin Lambe met a perfect cross into the box from teenager Diondre Dowling and forced home a header despite the efforts of goalkeeper Kaylin Darrell who got his fingertips to the ball.

PHC went ahead in the 36th minute when a simple side-foot from Lambe found the net after a cross from the left. Moments earlier, Robinson hit the framework twice in the space of about 15 seconds, his first effort coming back off the post before the follow-up shot smashed against the crossbar.

St David’s were being run ragged and their problems mounted in the 41st minute when defender Allan Douglas was sent off for a second yellow card. Within six minutes of the second half it got even worst for the Warriors as PHC struck twice to extend their lead to 4-1.

Robinson got on the scoresheet in the 50th minute when his corner on the left was punched into his own goal by goalkeeper Darrell. A minute later Lonnie Bascome added his name to the scorers when he drove a left-footed shot inside the near post.

St David’s were reduced to nine men in the 69th minute when defender Keijon Butterfield was shown a straight red card for foul and abusive language. PHC wrapped up victory with further goals by substitute Shakir Smith in the 79th minute and Khamisi Lightbourne six minutes from the end.

n In last night’s First Division encounter, also held at Somerset Cricket Club, Somerset Eagles announced themselves as promotion contenders with a 4-1 win over Young Men’s Social Club that lifted them up to third in the table.

Social Club took the lead through Giovanni Saltus in the 25th minute but after that it was virtually one-way traffic as Kanhai Fray netted twice in the 43rd and 68th minutes before an own goal from Tashun Saltus in the 75th minute made it 3-1 to Eagles. McLee Smith, of Social Club, had a penalty and the follow-up effort blocked by the goalkeeper late in the game before Bilal Lambert closed out the scoring for Eagles a minute into injury time.
