Reality check needed to preserve our future

Dear Editor,

We Bermudians need to take a reality check.

We are in a financial mess. I am hoping we can recover.

The government of the day is trying its best to turn the economy around but it may be a lost cause.

The expense of the Civil Service is devastating us and the unions seem to be reluctant to do or to agree to anything meaningful to help.

They seem to be self serving instead of thinking of the good and the future of our country.

Our Pension Fund has been drastically depleted to the point that some day in the not-too-distant future there will no funds left and pensions will cease for everyone.

During the time of the last administration the Civil Service went berserk by adding too many to their ranks. Employment was given to all and sundry.

Why did we not embrace the SAGE report recommendations? They may have been our best hope for the future.

I have heard Jamaica realised the mess they were in and they reduced the size of the Civil Service to a size they could support and their economy is turning around.

What can we do to preserve our future? What are our alternatives?
