Furlough days ‘seemingly killing families’

Dear Editor,

Surely the Government isn’t thinking of sacking Works & Engineering staff (who are responsible for picking up the trash along public roads outside of Hamilton).

They can’t be thinking of sacking PTB staff (who are responsible for transporting school children, elderly people, tourists and such) or the Ferry Service staff (same as PTB).

I doubt they are thinking of sacking Parks Department staff (who helped the Bermuda Regiment and that British Coast Guard crew after the double whammy hurricanes last year).

And I doubt they’re planning on sacking all public school teachers (meaning no student will be taught, and they might end up in some “gang” because of lack of discipline).

I also doubt they want to pay the sacked workers’ Belco bills, BTC bills, or even Cable (or Wow!) bills as well. How do you expect them to pay such bills without a job? Hope whatever money they saved up can pay that? And then what?

Some families are struggling to feed their families now, did the OBA ever stop to think about that or did they figure Bermudians — white or black who are struggling without jobs — could get by for free? How stupid can you get?

Even if you couldn’t pay anybody for overtime or the regular wages now, furlough days are seemingly killing many families — and I’m not talking about the ones who contributed to their “bling, bling” vehicles either.

I’m talking about the regular reliable ones, who although it’s a CRV they own, at least it’s not all that “flashy”. After all, a BMW isn’t exactly a cheap car to own but “jazz” it up and the OBA thinks you’re a member of Tucker’s Town all of a sudden.

What about the seniors in rest homes? Paying insurance companies? Paying land tax? Paying to get a bike or car licensed? The stores in Hamilton, who charge $60 for a school cardigan? Better look at changing your fees as things will get uglier by the minute.
