Franklin confident of title defence

Hard to beat: Franklin

Micah Franklin and Runa Reta, the men’s and women’s defending champions, have confirmed their entries for next month’s Digicel Bermuda National Squash Championships.

Franklin, the England-based world No 180, is excited about participating on home court. “I’m absolutely coming back to defend my title,” he said.

“It’s always the best event. I’m looking forward to some big matches in front of big home crowds again and hopefully I can come out on top for this year.”

With men’s, women’s, men’s veterans and women’s veterans categories, the BSRA is expecting a competitive event.

BSRA director of squash, Patrick Foster, said: “Every year this event seems to draw all the players together for a fantastic week. We are thrilled to have Digicel’s continued support.

“We’re very excited to see the strength and depth in the ladies and age group events and from a personal point of view.

“I’m happy to see Micah Franklin defending the title he wrestled from me last year. I’m fit, ready to challenge again and looking to see if I can win the trophy back.”

Although Foster has predicted a repeat of last year’s final, Kristen Johnson, the Courthouse pro and former world top 100 player, will be in the mix.

Johnson has had wins against Foster and Nick Kyme in recent months which will see him well placed to challenge for the title.

A strong draw also could see top players Noah Browne and Robert Maycock fly in from the United States to compete. Both are gifted and more than capable of causing some upsets. Other names to watch out for in what will be a large field are Kristian Muldoon, John Fletcher, Chris Dawson and Nazhir Smith, the National Junior Champion.

In the women’s draw, Reta, a two-times champion and former World No 29, will be hard to beat. She will face talented opposition in the form of Laura Robinson, Susie Lacey and possibly sisters Rachel and Kelly Barnes who are returning from overseas.

The championships will run from March 15 to 20.
