Michael Wolfe is a man on a mission.

Since declaring his intentions to run for president of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association at its annual general meeting next month, Wolfe has been pounding the campaign trail sharing his vision for the future of local tennis with the sport’s various stakeholders.

“Members of my team had an open meeting with all club representatives a couple of weeks ago to introduce the team, layout our mandate and to gather their feedback on the state of tennis in Bermuda,” he said.

“We believed that we were very well received.

“However, while I believe we are putting forward a very strong and well-rounded team for office, and feedback has been very positive, there is really no guarantee until the actual election.”

Wolfe has resigned as vice-president of the Temple of Tennis [based at Port Royal] to run against former BLTA president David Lambert at the AGM.

Coleridge Place, the BLTA president, has opted not to seek re-election.

Wolfe said that his passion for the sport, particularly working with youngsters at the grassroots level, is one of the things that inspired him to run for the BLTA’s top post.

“Having been involved in tennis for many years I find that my inspiration to do more comes from many areas, being involved in junior tennis has to be one of the most rewarding aspects,” he added.

“Getting kids involved and seeing them develop both from sporting and personal standpoint is something that I really enjoy.

“Having been involved at the club level and seeing the success we are having at the Temple of Tennis really inspires me to want to do more and also just the general love and passion for the sport of tennis.”

Wolfe said that if elected his administration would place heavy focus on player development.

“There will undoubtedly be a heavy focus on national programming, especially at the junior level,” he added.

“I would love to see us developing our tennis players to compete consistently both locally and international in our region at a high level.”

Wolfe believes local tennis is in a good state but stressed that there was always room for growth.

“I believe a good foundation is in place; however, there is always room for improvement,” he said.

“I believe if elected there is much more that can be done to further develop existing programmes and certainly room to introduce new ones.

“I think tennis as a sport can offer many opportunities. I tip my hat to work and time put in by our current president I really do believe that we can build on his foundation.”
